Tax Incentives for Preserving Historic Properties
This tax credit is on the federal level. It is offered through the National Park Service. There has been a change in the landscape of tax incentives at the federal level for the preservation of historic properties since the tax bill of 12/17. The 10% tax credit for the preservation of historic but non-designated buildings was eliminated, but the 20% credit for income producing, designated historic properties remains in place. This stuff is not simple, it is primarily for larger commercial endeavors, you will probably need your attorney and CPA... but check it out.
Contact a State Historic Preservation Office
State Historic Preservation Offices play a critical role in the tax incentives program. They are the first point of contact for property owners. They also:

Maintain records of buildings and districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as well as state and local certified historic districts.
Assist anyone wishing to list a building or a district in the National Register of Historic Places.
Advise applicants on rehabilitation projects and make site visits.
Make certification recommendations to the NPS.
